4. The cod feeds on the capelin from February till June, during capelin spawning migrations to coastal waters and back to the open sea after spawning (table 8). 5. Cod feeding on haddock and cod undergrowth is observed throughout the south part of the Barents Sea all the year round. The haddock and cod undergrowth is consumed most of all in the end of spring, in the autumn months and in December—January (table 9). In the autumn aud winter months Polar cod is of great importance in the cod nourishment in the Pechora-Vaigach, Kolguev and Novaya Zemlya banks and partly along the northern and southern slopes of the Gusinaya bank. 6. Euphausiidae and Hyperiidae are consumed by the cod in the summer months when great masses of Euphausiidae keep to deep and bottom water strata after spawning (table 11). 7. Bottom Crustacea (H y a s arancus v. hoeki, Eupagurus pubescens) and a number of benthonic invertebrates are consumed by the cod in the east fishery zones which are extremely rich in bottom fauna (tables 14, 15). 8. The importance of feeding organisms in the cod nourishment is subject to change in various years and depends on behaviour alte rations (associated with peculiarities of the hydrological regime) and abundance of feeding organism generations (tables 7, 12, 22 and fig. 8, 23). 9. In the west and central fishery areas the cod feeds up mainly on similar by their zoogeographical habitus species which are the boreal component of the Barents Sea fauna. In the east fishery areas and Novaya - Zemlya area purely arctic species (iow and high arctic species) become more important in the cod nourishment. For some years past in connection with the fact that waters of the south part of the Barents Sea grow warmer, a number of boreal species become more and more important in the cod nourishment while the role of arctic species is decreasing. 10. In the west fishery areas the cod feeds intensely in February— April on the herring at first and then on the capelin in its spawning migration to coastal waters. In May a sharp decrease is usually observed in the feeding intensity lasting till February (table 18, fig. 15—17). 11. in the central fishery areas an intense feeding of cod shoals is observed for the most part of the year: in summer —feeding on huphansiidae, in the end of autumn and winter beginning—on the herring and undergrowth of Gadidae, in the end of winter and at the coming of spring—on the herring and capelin. The lowest feeding is observed in the spring end, summer end and autumn beginning and in the end of D e cemb e r- January (table 19, fig. 18, 19). 12. In the east fishery areas the cod feeds up from August till November on undergrowth of haddockand cod, Polar cod, bottom Crustacea (Hyas araneus v. hoeki, Eupagurus pubescens, partly Mesi- dothea sabm i and iJicatylis rathkei), various benthonic invertebrates 169
