(Cardiam ciliatum , С. groenlandicum, Buccinidae ) and bottom small fish which are of no importance to fishing industry (table 20, fig. 20). One may judge of the nourishment character in every fishery area by the tables 16, 17, fig. 14, 21 and the tables in appendix. 13. The travelling of cod shoals from west fishery areas to central areas and afterwards—to east areas is a food migration. The travelling of the mature cod from the bo rder regions of cod areal westward to the accumulation places before spawning as well as young ccd travelling (somewhat later) to the spring feeding regions are to be considered as food migrations too. 14. The following periods are to be marked in the year course of the Barents Sea cod feeding. I. Summer feeding up on Euphausiidae (June—beginning of August) in the central fishery areas. II. Autumn feeding up on Gadidae and benthos invertebrates (August—beginning of December) in the east fishery areas. While travelling to the places of accumulation before spawning and regions of wintering cod shoals are fed up on Polar cod and in central fishery areas—on herring and undergrowth of cod and haddock. Ilia. The period of low feeding of young cod (December—January) at the beginning of wintering. Iilb. The period of almost complete lack of nourishment of the mature cod during spawning migrations and spawning itself. IV. Spring feeding up on herring and then capelin (February— April) in the west fishery areas and — in the years of high tempe rature of bottom water strata— in the central areas too. V. The period of forced starvation because of scarcity of feeding organisms in bottom water strata (table 23, fig. 26). The time and intensity of the cod feeding during these periods are subject to change in certain years and depend first of all on the hydrological regime of the Barents Sea waters (table 23, fig. 24). The year course of the cod feeding is shown by the table 21 and figure 22.
