THE FEEDING OF THE COD I N S O U T H P A R T OF THE B A R E N T S SEA B y V. / Zatsepin and N. S. Petrova ( S u m m a r y ) This paper is a result of working up the observations on the feeding of the cod in the south part of the Barents Sea within the period 1934 — 1938, There were analysed: 1) 12 403 cod stomachs by a laboratory quantitative - weighing method. The contents of every fish stomach were examined, classified, counted and whenever possible—weighed separately. In order to get comparative results and to judge of the intensity of feeding, so called „the index of stomach filling" was calculated,— i. e. the ratio of the stomach contents to the weight of fish pro deciroille—in percentage increased by 100 times. 2) 1363 samples (every sample consisting of 25 stomachs) by exa mination of cod stomach contents on fishing trawlers. 3) The records on the cod feeding in the fishing trawler reports for the years 1934— 1937, which gave 162 818 data in all. In materials worked up were distributed among the zones, years and months as shown by the tables 1, 2, 3. The feeding of the immature cod of the year classes 1929 and partly 1930 (which prevailed in the 1934 — 1938 catches) is considered in this work. During the period 1934— 1937 these year-classes win tered in the Barents Sea. Towards the end of 1938 most of them reached maturity and started spawning migrations to the Lophoten Islands. Working up the materials resulted in the possibility making the following conclusions: 1. The cod is fed up on not more than 20 species out of the 200 species found in the cod stomachs (see table 5). The basic food of cod shoals consists of small fishes: herring, caplin, cod and haddock undergrowth, Polar cod, Drepanopsettci and other bottom fishes belonging to the families Lumpenidae, Zocircidae, Cottidae etc. On the second place in the cod nourishment are Euphausiidae and Hyperiidae. Shrimps, bottom Crustacea and other benthonic invertebrates are of little importance. In autumn and winter jelly-fish may be swallowed often in great numbers (table 4). 2. The feeding organisms which are in abundance in the cod dwelling regions predominate in the cod nourishment. This is stipulated by the peculiarities of the biology and distribution of the feeding organisms in the Barents Sea. The cod, however, being on active fish of prey „prefers*1 feeding on fish. 3. The herring (Clupea harengus harengus) is consumed by cod most of all from October till April. During this period herring keeps to the deep and bottom water strata. 168
