The Venerable Tryphon of Pechenga, Apostle of the Lapps "This saintly great missionary and hermit, the Venerable Father Try phon , was born to and brought up by holy and pious parents in the Novgorod region near the town o f Torzhok"'. Born in June 1485 and baptized with the name Mitrofan2, the future great saint o f Northern Russia was blessed by the Lord with a powerful physique, enormous strength and excellent health. According to the traditions o f those times, the son o f a priest had to follow in his father s footsteps. However, Mitrofan was not destined to pursue his ancestors’ path. One o f the local princes or boyars evidently took a liking to this handsome and well-built boy from a pious priestly family.
