LEBEDEY GEOLOGICAL AND PETROGRAPHIC SKETCH OF THE KANDALAKSHA — KOLVITSA REGION S u m m a r y The au tho r gives a brief account of the results of his geolo­ gical survey in th e region of the south-western p a r t of the Kola Pen insu la, between the villages Kandalaksha and Kolvitsa (see map). This region has not been systematically studied by an y ­ body; sparce and occasional d a ta on its geology are to be found in the works of geologists Kassin, Fedorov, Beliankin, Kupletsky, etc. As regards its geology, th e region explored presents an area made of a m igh ty series of Pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks in c lu ­ d ing both altered igneous and sedimentary formations, and of an overlying more or less th ick series of Qua te rnary deposits, — glacial and to a less degree, fluvialite and lacustrine deposits. The s tudy of the ancient metamorphic series p erm itted to d is tin ­ guish three rock complexes differing from each other in their age and petrographic composition. The most ancient complex is represented by b io tite and amphi- bole-biotite gneisses w ith subo rd inate lenses and partings of amphibolites; the rocks of t h a t complex are probab ly p a rtly of sed imentary and p a rtly of igneous origin. They are crumpled in to numerous large and small folds oriented la titu d in a lly and in p a r t complicated by later folding processes.
