Kirovsk is a town in the center of the Kola Peninsula in the south of the Khibiny Mountains, situated on the shore of Bolshoy Vudyavr Lake. In the early 20th century the Khibiny Mountains were an unpopulated desert. The lo cal indigenous people — the Sami — herded reindeer there. Very few Europeans visited this area on research missions. In 1926 Aleksandr Fersman's expedition discovered deposits of ap atite and nepheline ores which gave a start to an active industrial development and populating of the Khibiny Mountains. In the ir southern part, on the shore of Bolshoy Vudyavr Lake a sm a ll and amazingly cozy town of Kirovsk was founded, and the unique mountain landscapes have be come its beautiful decoration. The 30th of October, 1931, has become the town’s birthday. Its name was Khibinogorsk in 1929-1934. Thanks to the wo rld ’s largest deposit of apa tite and nepheline ores, mining and chemical industry has been actively developing in Kirovsk. Apatite is the "fertility stone’’. The Khibiny apa tite ores are among the best by their quality in the world.
