The city of Monchegorsk is located in the center of the Kola Peninsula on the shores of the picturesque lakes Imandra and Lumbolka. Lakes and lakelets are countless in the vicinity of Monchegorsk, which gives it a name of “the land of a thousand lakes". Moose is the symbol of the city; its figure decorates the Five-corner square. In heraldry moose is a symbol of strength and stam ina — and these are the qualities typical of any resident of Monchegorsk. The town owes its birth to the Severonikel combine plant, which is today the JSC Kolskaya Mining and Metallurgical Company (JSC Kola MMC), the town-building enterprise. JSC Kola MMC is a daughter company of PJSC Norilsk Nikel, the leading production complex of the Mu rmansk region, an integrated mining and processing production group extracting copper- and-nickel ores and producing non-ferrous metals. An industrial site of the Company producing electrolyte nickel and copper, carbonyl powders, cobalt concentrate and concentrates of precious metals is located in Monchegorsk.
