N.N. Grishin, O.N. Krasheninnikov, O.V. Suvorova LEADER IN BUILDING SCIENCES IN THE KOLA NORTH (dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Department o f Building Material Technologies of ICTREMRM KSC RAS) A brief survey of a 60-year-long work carried out in the Building Materials Laboratory (later on - the Department of Building Material Technologies (DBMT) of ICTREMRM KSC RAS) is presented. The developments of DBMT underlay the construction of such production lines in the Murmansk region as factories of common and silicate bricks from by-products of the Olenegorsk Ore-dressing and Processing Complex; insulating slabs from flaming slag of the Severonikel Smeltery; facing stone articles and stowing compounds from granite slag of the Pechenganikel Smeltery; baddeleyite concentrate from dressing wastes of Kovdor ores; high-temperature insulation from vermiculite of the Kovdor Deposit, and glazed tiles as well. It has been found that natural and man-made primary products of the Kola Peninsula can be turned into hydraulic and air binders, concretes (heavy, light, cellular, fine-grained, decorative, radioactivity-protecting, fire- and heat-resistant), ceramic, refractory, and glass-crystalline materials. The results of investigations have been described in 2000 publications including 21 monographs and 110 author’s certificates and patents. The developments have been awarded with 22 medals both at national and international exhibitions. The DBMT researchers are actively participating in training of engineers for the building industry. Keywords: the Department of Building Material Technologies of ICTREMRM KSC RAS, main results of activities. P.B. Gromov, V.P. Kovalevsky, G.B. Kunshina 55 th ANN IVERSARY OF THE INSTITUTE OF CHEM ISTRY AND TECHNOLOGY OF RARE ELEMENTS AND MINERAL RAW MATERIALS The history of creating the Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Rare Elements and Mineral Raw Materials as a part of the Kola Science Center , of its structure, work group and research areas is related. The most significant results achieved in the course of 55 years are presented. Keywords: ICTREMRM KSC RAS, history, collaborators, achievements. N.M. ON HIS WORK AT THE PHYSICS OF THE EARTH DEPARTMENT OF THE LENINGRAD STATE UNIVERSITY At the beginning of the next year, it will be the 100th anniversary of the famous soviet geophysicist Professor Boris Brjunelli, the vice director of the Polar Geophysical Institute from 1967 to 1985. To commemorate this outstanding scientist who did a lot for the modern scientific image of PGI, we are publishing here his bibliographic memoirs on the little-known facts from the period of making Russian geophysical science.
