EUDIALYTE Eudialyte is the most beautiful гаге mineral that won general respect of mineralogist professionals and collectors. Chemically, it is a silicate of zirconium, Na and Ca with a very complicated and unusual crystalline structure. Eudialyte is also remarkable with its varying composition. It may contain considerable amounts of many rare metals. There is no exaggeration in saying that this remarkable mineral contains one third of the Mendeleev's table. Currently, eudialyte is titled as a head of the group of more than 20 mineral species. As translated from Greek, eudialyte means “well decomposable”, since it easily dissolves in acids. The name was given by F. Stromeyerto the Greenland samples in 1819. W. Ramsay first discovered the mineral in the Khibiny and Lovozero rocks and described it in the late 20"' century. Eudialyte forms crystals, but commonly occurs as grainy extractions in nepheline, microcline and apatite. The common colouring is purple and red, other colours are due to some processes of the mineral changing. The biggest extractions of eudialyte and splendid-looking samples can be found in the Khibiny pegmatites. The mineral is often called “Lopar (or Sami) Blood". In his “Memoirs of the stone” Acad. A.E. Fersman delivers the little bit changed legend about the struggle of the Sami with Shvet (authentic Sami spelling meaning “Swedish” - Translator) Kuiva. “Thus, let they slip the dogs of war - some with fowling pieces, other had only knives. Thus, let they slip the dogs of war on the Shvets, and strong was the Shvet and had he no fear of the Lopars. He first decoyed them to the Seityavr and did start slaughtering them. Once did he make a right stab, ten our warriors are dead, their blood splashing all over the tundras and khibinys; once did he make a left stab, the other ten are dead again, and drops of the Lopar blood were splashed all over the tundras". Occurring in big aggregates eudialyte is of industrial interest as a source of zirconium, which alloys are used in the nuclear energetics. A.V. Voloshin, Dr.Sci.
