MUSEUM On October 26, 2009 the meeting of the Scientific Board of the Geological Institute KSC RAS was held, at which the Museum of Geology and Mineralogy was unanimously given the name of its founder I.V. Bel'kov (13.08.1917-18.11.1989). Dr. (Geol.- min.), Honoured Scientist of the Russian Socialistic Federative Soviet Republic, honorary member of the Russian Mineralogical Society Igor Vladimirovich Bel'kov is the whole epoch in the history of the Geological Institute KSC RAS and Kola Branch of the Russian Mineralogical Society. The latter he headed almost a quarter of the century (1961-1985). I.V. Bel'kov established a number of scientific trends at the Institute: isotope geochemistry, microprobe investigations of minerals, experimental petrography and mineralogy, mineralogy and geochemistry of rare elements, complex geophysical investigations. He devoted a lot of time to the study of mineral deposits on the Kola Peninsula. I.V. Bel'kov 's personal scientific interests embrace geology, petrology, mineralogy, metallogeny and geochr ono l ogy of grani t es, genes i s of metamorphic rocks, technological mineralogy of rare- metal and kyanite raw materials. His investigations allowed one to substantiate distinguishing the Kola rare-metal province, made a contribution to the knowledge of the evolution's early stages of the Earth's crust of the NE Baltic Shield. Under his supervision diagrams of interregional correlation of metamorphic complexes were set up, metallogenic zoning of the region was performed and the ways of efficiency rise of the Kola region deposits were determined at the expense of complex utilization of mineral raw materials and waste recovery of mining- smelting plants. I.V. Bel'kov was no great scientist merely, but a remarkable artist. His northern landscapes decorate the walls of the Museum of Geology and Mineralogy - his pride and favourite brainchild. We have lived 20 years without Igor Vladimirovich Bel'kov. But his name is still being heard at the Institute almost every day by visitors of our marvellous Museum. From now on his name will be in the Museum's official name - I.V. Bel'kov Museum of Geology and M i n e r a l o g y of the Geo l ogi ca l Institute KSC RAS. Our mu s e um has been regularly visited by guests of KSC RAS and the towns of Apatity and Kirovsk. The Book of Honorary Visitors has g r a t e f u l and exci t ed r espons es of Vice-President of the USSR Academy o f S c i e n c e s and President of the All Soviet Mineralogical Society A. Sidorenko (1980), test-pilots M. Popova and G. Osipenko (1981), Tscheka employees of the Central Apparatus of KGB USSR and Administration of KGB of the Murmansk region (5 illegible signatures, 1985), member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union M. Solomentsev (1985), ambassadors of USSR V. Pavlov, Yu. Mikheev, V. Belyaev, E. Nersesov, V. Chekmazov and Advisor of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yu. Patsanov (1987), President of the USSR Academy of Sciences G. Marchuk (1987), cosmonaut-pilot G. Strekalov (1988), Chief of a Department of the Emergency Control Ministry of Russia general-lieutenant M. Dzybkov (2000), President of the USSR Academy of Sciences Acad. Yu. Osipov (2001), cosmonaut- pilot G. Grechko (2004), leader of a delegation of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences Prof. Yang (2009) and many, many others. Yu.L. Voytekhovsky, Dr., Prof. И.В.
