33 Trip to Khibiny In August, 2009 the Geological Institute KSC RAS was host to a group of international granite specialists, who came to Apatity to visit the Khibiny Massif. The group, sponsored by «Eurogranites», included geologists from Belgium, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Slovakia, the United States. «Eurogranites» is an informal group, whose purpose is to conduct annual field trips to classic granitic sites in Europe. This year's trip was organized by scientists from the University of Helsinki, coordinated by Tapani Ramo and Janna Halla. The trip began in Rovaniemi, Finland, and the group spent two days visiting Proterozoic granites in northern Finland, after which they proceeded by bus into Russia. One night was spent in Murmansk to allow a visit to some beautiful outcrops in the Portlubol Massif. Then, the group travelled on to Kirovsk, where they spent four nights in the Hotel Severnaya. The first day was spent at the Institute in Apatity, meeting with the director, visiting the Mineralogical Museum and attending several presentations by the participants. The highlight of this day was the chance to view the core from the Superdeep Kola Borehole. The following two days involved ambitious hikes, one day to the Ramsay Pass and one day to the Snow Cirque. This was a truly special opportunity, and the weather cooperated beautifully as everyone stayed warm and dry. Special thanks to our guides for these hikes, Arkady Shpachenko, Sergei Karpov, and Tamara Bagrintceva. The hikers were charmed by the beautiful scenery of the Khibiny and extremely interested to see the detailed geological studies of this unique alkaline complex. Most popular were samples of eudialyte, which are so easily found in the Khibiny and so rare in the rest of the world. The participants were truly grateful for the opportunity to visit this special place and participate in the scientific exchange with their Russian colleagues. Maybe some of us will come back to ski in winter! The Conference highlighted topical issues of complex study of ancient crystalline shields deep structure, using geological- geophysical methods. Discussed were scientific and practical tasks o f exploring minerals, interpreting geophysical data and numerical modeling o f the Earth interior, mining geophysics. The Conference included 5 sections, where 40 oral reports and 20 posters were presented. Attendees, 120 in total, came from Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Murmansk and Petrozavodsk. The participants agreed on the Conference having contributed to enhancing friendly ties between researchers and establishing new scientific contacts between experts o f adjacentfields o f study.
