Among the participants of that event: “Gazprom Geologorazvedka”, Semi-submersible drilling rig “Doosan”, MRCSC “Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk”, “Ecoshelf”, ASS “Rubin”, FBE SMPCSA – Sakhalin branch, EMERCOM (Sakhalin region). August, 2014 NC “Rosneft” and ExxonMobil joint venture company “Karmorneftegaz” began drilling using West Alpha rig at “Universitetskaya-1”, the northernmost well in this country. Information about “Universitetskaya-1” well: sea depth in the drilling site is about 80 m, project depth of vertical well is 2350 m from the rotary table. The signal to start drilling was given by Vladimir Putin, Russian President, via a video link to the Kara Sea with Igor Sechin, the Head of Rosneft, and Glenn Waller, the Head of ExxonMobil Russia. Special representative of President of the Russian Federation on international cooperation and Member of the Board of “Rosneft” Artur Chilingarov as well as representative of North Atlantic Drilling Jan Tore Theimann took part in that ceremony. Igor Sechin: “The start of exploratory drilling in the Kara Sea is one of the most important event in this year for global oil and gas industry. We are waiting from this drilling to discover and establish a new oil-bearing province in the Kara Sea. Arctic Shelf development has got a huge multiplicative effect on the whole Russian economic system”. West Alpha rig was provided by “North Atlantic Drilling”, the Norwegian company, which had signed long-termed agreement with “Rosneft” in July 30, 2014 concerning the offshore drilling. West Alpha was transported via the Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas and installed on the drilling site of the license area “Vostochno-Prinovozemelskiy-1” in the Kara Sea. The drilling rig made the way of over 1900 nautical miles to reach its destination. The rig’s characteristics: 30,700 tons in deadweight, 70 m long, 66 m wide, the derrick hangs 108.5 meters over the main deck, and it drafts during drilling for 21.5 m. The rig is held on the drilling site by an 8-anchor positioning system, which provides advanced stability for the rig. The most part of the platform cannot be reached by waves, so they do not interrupt the working process. The maximum drilling depth of West Alpha is 7 km. The drilling is going to continue for two months. The experts from “Rosneft” and “ExxonMobil” spent several months preparing the rig for the Kara Sea drilling operation. West Alpha was upgraded to improve the overall reliability of its main and supplementary equipment and for all systems to be ready for low temperatures, including, above all others, life support and evacuation systems. The rig is equipped with an innovative system for the monitoring of ice condition, icebergs detection and tracking of sea ice. It uses infrared cameras and modern onboard radars, and analyzes satellite and air intelligence data. “Rosneft” and “ExxonMobil” developed a unique iceberg collision prevention plan for providing safety during operations of West Alpha on severe ice conditions. It even includes applying physical action to the ice: if experts suspect a hummock or flow can damage the rig, special support vessels will tow it away to a safe distance. If physical action is impossible, the system will isolate the well in a way that is harmless for the environment, and the rig will transfer to a safer location. The rig is equipped with two groups of blowout preventers and an enhanced subsea shut-in device. 4 îêòÿáðü 2014 № 5 (25) ÌóðìàíøåëüôÈíôî
