EXPLORATIONS 22 The use of areal seismic survey has been already practiced in geological mapping for tracing of pinching-out zones of the Juras sic to Cretaceous cover sequences and po tential hydrocarbon traps associated with them, for the creation of pre-Jurassic base on sheet R-41 (Fig. 5), for the creation of structural maps series on the Laptev Sea basin and for marking of prospective zones and oil-and-gas accumulation features on sheets S-50; S-51,52 [Shipilov, Shkarubo, 2011, Shkarubo et al., 2014]. In this regard it is possible to provide for the update of sheet map sets on separate sheets. It is reasonable, for example, to up date the maps of T-series on the West Arctic shelf published as ‘A New Series’ because in these regions exactly modern (seismic - in the first turn) and available (performed against the government contract) geological and geophysical data was obtained. Since 2013 a significant scope of work as sociated with oil-and-gas sector on the shelf has been performed against the contracts with subsoil users (Gazprom and Rosneft companies). The data obtained are confiden tial but it will become available anytime soon. However we should also bear in mind that the prestack data processing obtained from the funds is rather difficult and expensive. Another, equally reasonable problem in the process of seamless coverage for large regions is the development, updating and unification of series legends. There is a cer tain practice in this sector. In the process of creating of sheet sets for the boundaries of the Baltic, Mezen, South Kara and West Siberian series, correction and adjustment of structural and formational zoning with mapped sectors was performed. In addition based on the experience of the North Kara sheets series sets prepara tion the necessity of this legend simplifica tion becomes obvious especially with regard to creation of non-stitch coverage. Thus the actual series legend (2009) differs in unfeasi- bly numerous structural and formational sec tioning with marking of various stratigraphic formations in each zone. For example, there were nine structural and formational zones detected in the block of highs in the western part of the Barents plate with the availability of three wells in one zone and one well in an other. Such situation results in the following: even when creating only one sheet there’s necessity of drawing ‘fences’ on a map and on sections as well with continuous tracking across all zones of seismic horizons which are defined as ‘quasi-synchronous’. When many sheets are created, to avoid this situation, we ‘dragged’ the formations across all zones and made a ‘Supplement to the legend’. The third possible direction is the prepara tion of certain sheets at a scale of 1:200,000 in transit coastal areas provided that such explorations are indicated onshore. We hope that the Federal Agency for Min eral Resources and the leading scientific or ganizations of the country, namely: VSEGEI, VNIIOkeanologia will try their best to maintain systematic approach for the exploration of the environment state, geological structure and principles of mineral resources distribu tion with further geological mapping of the continental shelf - the main reserve of the fuel and energy sector in Russia.
