ONBOARD THE RESEARCH VESSEL 48 taking such a photo was a solid reason fo r a more close acquaintance. Artyom is from Monchegorsk. His parents have been working at the Severonickel combine during all their work lives; his mother is a crane operator and father is a mechanician. Like many other local guys Artyom entered the Monchegorsk Polytechnic College after school and got a reliable profession of industrial enterprise electrician there. But in the town of steelworkers and mineworkers the mining engineering department of the Petrozavodsk University is popular among the young. Three years ago Arlashin graduated from it getting the profession of geophysicist and was employed by MAGE. “Why MAGE, Artyom?” “ I got to a voyage onboard the NALIVKIN already duting my practical training as a student. It was catchy!” In the previous season Artyom took part in the similar expedition onboard another honored MAGE steamboat, the RV Professor Kurentsov. And now he is commenting our summer success expertly: “Autumn is right around the corner. Last year onboard the RV Professor Kurentsov we had to mark the follow ing in the ship’s log very often: ‘The vessel cannot approach the line because of the ice conditions’ or ‘The line shooting was stopped because of an iceberg right ahead’.” But in this voyage Arlashin was probably pining fo r home more than anyone else onboard the vessel as the voyage had interrupted his honeymoon. Shortly before the voyage the geophysicist married his girlfriend Kseniya after five years of dating; she studied at the same university at the sociology department. “ Now we are living in a rental apartment in Murmansk, but V ik to r VATALIN В и к т о р ВАТАЛИН I will try to make money fo r our own dwelling during the marine expeditions!” the young geophysicist says sharing his econom ic program as being an optim ist when you are 26 years old is a holy cause of common life. At the very beginning of my article when I was telling you about the Party Chief I seem to mention that he differentiated himself from others onboard the vessel with his beard. But such a ‘bearded uniqueness’ had not been remained onboard the NALIVKIN fo r long. By the old seafaring tradition some people also started to grow a beard which however was shaved off w ithout mercy on the day of arriving to Murmansk. That is why in the pictures you can see Artyom Arlashin having the seasonal facial hair. The newly-wed used to chat with his beloved wife via the Internet and daily sweet-talk to her by mobile phone. And now it is time to tell you about Viktor Vatalin who I have already mentioned above and in the absence of whom it would have been impossible to even imagine the existence of any communication type onboard the NALIVKIN. WHERE ARE THE BARGE HAULERS? “The marine radio was developing in my presence and the profession of a ship radio officer simply vanished” , said Viktor Vatalin. “Is it possible that the re ’s not any transm itter with a manual key fo r the Morse code?” I asked Viktor with disbelief. “I can’t remember the day I held the key in my hand last time! Nowadays the position of radio officer is called captain’s mate fo r electronics, and all shore linking is conducted automatically.” Now he is responsible fo r all electronics: from antennas on top of the vessel to echo sounder vibrator on the ship’s bottom. All antenna equipment is located on the upper deck - the so called antenna deck above the deck house and requires special attendance. The reception of signals from navigation satellite allows detection of the NALIVKIN location offshore with accuracy of 3 (three) cm regarding the end of antenna on the deck. Such accuracy is of great importance regarding geological exploration. MURMANSK MILE • 3-2016
