ONBOARD THE RESEARCH VESSEL VICTOR POSYOLOV THANK YOU, GEOTEAM! Interview by Svetlana KOVALEVSKAYA Photos by Pavel VISHNEVSKY and provided by Victor POSYOLOV archives Murmansk Mile interviewed Victor Posyolov - Deputy Director for Geophysics in the federal state unitary enterprise All-Russian Research Institute for Ocean Geology and Mineral Resources, Dr. Sci. in Geology and Mineralogy - on the scientific refitting of the first original modern seismic vessel. V ic to r Antonovich POSYOLOV, Deputy D ire c to r fo r Geophysics o f FSUE VN IIOkeangeologia Виктор Антонович ПОСЕЛОВ - зам е сти тель дире ктора по ге оф и зи ке ФГУП «ВНИИОкеангеология» 32 “Until 1991 there was Sevmorgeologiya, the largest association in the USSR made up of nearly three and a half thousand employees,” Mr. Posyolov recalls, the Sevmorgeologiya chief engineer back then. “ It consisted of five survey expeditions: Kamchatka, Far East, Norilsk, Polar, and Arctic ones. It was a big day for us when in 1985 Marine Arctic Geological Expedition (JSC MAGE) obtained the first original modern seismic vessel GEOLOG DMITRIY NALIVKIN. It was built in Finland and fo r some period of time was remaining the only seismic vessel meeting all the existing requirements. That was why it was not surprising that the Norwegian company Geoteam was interested in it and asked MAGE to take part in the survey of the shelf of the Norwegian and North Seas at the commission of the Western oil companies.” “By the early 1990s geological geological exploration in Russia had been de-escalated, financing stopped, so the offer Norwegians made came in just in the right moment. Though, our technologies and seismic equipment did not fully meet the requirements applicable to the contractual offshore survey back then. We conducted negotiations with Director of Geoteam, a very good specialist as well as a decent and frank person. Gennady Kazanin, nowadays General Director of MAGE and its chief engineer back then, participated in the negotiations too. We agreed that the vessel was to be refitted and equipped with the modern western facilities so that it would fit for working as per the western standards.” MURMANSK MILE • 3-2016
