Geomagnetic vector residuals of MAGSAT data on 13 Nov. 1979 in the northern (top) and southern (bottom) hemispheres, separated into A S (the perturbation transverse to the main geomagnetic field and directed toward the sun), A D (the perturbation transverse to the main field and to the dusk-dawn direction), А В ц (the pe r t u r b a tion parallel to the main field), дF (total force p e rtur bation is also shown, which is nearly the same as Д B )( . an intense northward B z has been pointed out by Iwasaki (1971), Maezawa ( 1976 ^ Horwitz and Akasofu (1979); the existence of HBZ current-system was predicted by Levitin et al. (1982) after analyzing the relationship between field- aligned currents and the ionospheric currents with an appropriate assumption on the electric conductivity of the ionosphere. In order to study the overall phenomena associated with field-aligned currents, it is necessary to combine the MAGSAT data with other spacecraft data or ground observations. A satisfactory coincidence has already been reported for the spatial relationship between the regions of enhanced field- aligned current density and of electron precipitation or discrete auroral arc, through a comparison of MAGSAT data with the TIROS-N and NOAA-6 s p ace craft data (Kamide et al.,1984), and with the ground auroral observation (Lanchester and Vttllis, 1985). Note here that MAGSAT carried only m a g n e t o meters and a star зепаогfor a very accurate determination of the satellite attitude in space for a precise measurement oi the three components of the geomagnetic field. 78
