N.FUKUSHIMA ELECTRIC CURRENTS IN THE EARTH'S ENVIRONMENTAL SPACE REVEALED FROM THE ANALYSIS OF SATELLITE DATA ABSTRACT. Satellite observations of the geomagnetic field have contribu ted not only to the study of the world distribution of the permanent magnetic field (originating from the earth's crust, mantle and core), but also to investigating the e-lectric current flow in the earth's environmental space. A recent low-altitude satellite MAGSAT provided us with the accurate three-component magnetic field data along the dawn and dusk meridians at a height of 250-550 km. The MAGSAT data enables us to discover various important characteristics of the electric currents flowing in the ionosphere and m a gneto sphere, such as: - field-aligned current.patterns in high latitudes for different condit ions of interplanetary magnetic field, including the appearance of a specific field-aligh.ed current pair (called NBZ current-system) in the vicinity of the geomagnetic pole during the interval of northward interplanetary magnetic field; 74
