•HILATJ/sensor 17July 83 Pig. 4. Pour spectra of number flux vs. energy that span the electron "inverted V" at 10:22:45 UT. The spectra are peaked at about 1 keV. The location of each of these flux enhancements is coincident with the regions of upward flowing small-scale Birkeland currents that are embedded in the large-scale earthward flowing Region 1 current. Pour consecutive electron spectra (differential flux vs.energy) taken with the zenith-looking detector between 10:22:44.50 and 10:22:45.25 are shown in Pi g . 4. Each spectrum has a peak at about 1 keV, suggesting an “inverted V" acceleration event resulting from a 1 keV field-aligned potential drop. In the two earlier enhancements, peaks in each individual spectrum are not well defined, but the spectrogram suggests a narrow region of acceleration may be present in each case. A spectacular double "inverted V" with peaks at 10:23:15 and 10:23:25 marks the onset of an extended region of electron flux enhancement. The spectra in this region are peaked in energy at 3 keV and 6 keV. A sharp increase of more than an order of magnitude in the electron flux at energies greater than 10 keV is located near the center of the second feature at 10:23:22 UT. The increase in the electron flux at high energies is coincident with the increase in density of the Region 2 Birkeland current observed from the magnetic field measurements. Equatorward of the double "inverted V" the electron flux at bo'th high and low energies remains relatively uniform, while poleward of this feature the ■precipitating electron flux is highly structured with a series of "inverted V" features visible in the energy-flux-time spec trogram. The change in the precipitating electron, structure and energy seen in the spectrogram at the bright auroral emission displays characteristics of 52
