The analysis of several substorms results in the main calcul ations! (1) with the western edge of the expansive auroral bulge is connected the spatial boundary between the different magnetospheric regions and the anticorrelation between the proton and electron fluxes; (2) simultaneous increase of energetic electrons fluxes is observed in the vicinity of the breakup region, INTRODUCTION. It is known that the substorm associated westward electro- jet is enhanced by discrete intensifications. Each intensification is accompa nied by a Pi2 pulsation burst, an assemble of intensifications gives the active phase of the substorm. Very often one or two initial intensifications with bright aurora have weak magnetic effect. The maximum intensity of the westward electrojet and the greatest expansion of the auroral bulge are observed during the following intensifications, and very often in the cases when the IMP B„ component becomes northward /1/. In this work several substorms are analyzed using ground-based and GEOS-2 measurements with the aim to specify 1) the difference between these two groups of intensifications in the dynamics of the auroral magnetosphere and 2) the energetic particle variations in the western part of the substorm current wedge. EXPERIMENTAL DATA. The work includes the measurements of proton and electron fluxes with the energy > 27 keV, measurements of the magnetic fiels taken on the geostationary satellite GEOS-2, the data of all-sky cameras from three stations and ground-based magnetograms from 20 stations in the night sector. Pive substorm events observed during the SAMBO-79 campaign have been analyzed, viz. January 23, 30, March 4, 5» 6, 1979. Intensification moments were determined by three criteria: Pi2 pulsation bursts on the midlatitude station Borok, a sharp change of the magnetic field H-component on the auroral zone stations and brightening of the arc followed by poleward motion of the aurora. In the work the IMP data from the satellites ISEE-3 and IMP-8 have been used. Note that all the considered events took 43
