Pig. 4 presents the m a p s of sequential p o sitions of boundaries of the n o n p u l ­ sating band of the t o r c h w i t h one minute interval. The eastward drift of the t o r c h is clearly seen. The height of external b oundary of the torch cha­ ng e s i n the range 100-115 k m co r r e s ­ p onding to characteristic energy 4- 10 ke V of precipitating electron f l u x /5/. The height of the internal b o u n d a r y of n o n p u lsating band is h i g h e r th a n 115 k m (less than 4 k e V i So the outward b oundary of the torch i s formed b y harder particles. D i s c u s s i o n . In conditions w h e n torches are absent diffuse aurora u s u a l l y represents a plane ba n d of several kilometers wide. In most cases it has clear n o r t h e r n as well as southern boundaries. Equatorward of this b a n d at h i g h geomagnetic a c t i v i t y a pulsating luminosity is observed on the weaker background.
