5. SUMMARY. The main results of the study: a). The 1-m auroral irregularities (140 MHz radar auroral backscatter) can arise episodically whan ionospheric electric field is 5 - 1 5 laV/m i.e. well below the Farley-Buneman instability threshold. b) . The evident increasing of the 1-m irregularity amplitude and echo occurrence take place when electric field exceeds a "soft" threshold E > E “ ru 1 3 - 1 5 mV/m. i c) . A modelling of the radar auroral backscatter in the patch­ like (filamental) electrojet has shown that it is necessary to take into account the unresolved ionospheric microstructure in the E-layer electron densities (conductivities) as its effects in the backscatter amplitudes and irregularity drift velocities. 27
