Sodankyla Geophysical Observatory, Finland COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON AURORAL PHENOMENA OBSERVED IN KOLA PENINSULA AND IN FINLAND ON DECEMBER. 1/2 AND 11/12, 1977 Introduction. According to the proposal, made by the Ste ering Committee for IMS [l] of a special auroral observing period from Dec. 1. to 15»» 1977 the ground based instruments both in Kola Peninsula and in Finland were switched on high recording speed during this time interval. Good optical obser vations were made only during the nights of Dec. 1./2., 2./5», and 11./12. Geomagnetic recordings made at the Nurmijarvi Ge ophysical Observatory show that the five most active daye in December 1977 were 2., 4.,11., 12., and 1?., while the five most quiet days were 9»» 16., 19-* 20., and 23. Hence this period was well predicted for potential auroral activity stu dies. After a preliminary study of the data it turned out that the most interesting events took place during the night bet ween 1. and 2. of December. Unusually high auroral activity was observed in the late morning hours with several red co ronas over N o t h e m Finland and Kola Peninsula* The interpre tation of these auroral events will be the main subject of our present study. The anomalous night of Dec. 1./2. will be compared to the night of Dec. 11./12. which has typical auroral features*
