Kola Science Centre RAS, 2001. -260 p. The book deals with the theoretical research o f transport process of auroral particles (electrons with initial energies more than 50 eV, protons and hydrogen atoms with initial eneigies more than 1 keV) in the Earth’s atmosphere at the high latitude region. The following main areas are discussed in the book: a) the study o f the present-day state of knowledge o f collisional cross-sections (integral and differential) for scattering o f electrons, protons and hydrogen atoms by main atmospheric gases (atomic oxygen, molecular oxygen and molecular nitrogen) in the range o f eneigies from excitation thresholds up to the area of asymptotical behavior o f cross-sections; b) the research in detail of the fundamental transport characteristics (the distribution function and its change, penetration depths and albedo-flux, spatial beam spreading, etc.) of auroral particles in the three-component model o f neutral Earth’s atmosphere with dipole magnetic field; c) the study o f the distribution of auroral particle eneigy at internal levels o f the atmosphere components (electronic and oscillatory excitation levels o f atomic oxygen, molecular oxygen and molecular nitrogen). The book is intended for the scientists, studying the near-earth space. It can also be useful for post-graduate students and senior students of appropriate specialties, majoring in physics and geophysics. Figures — 172, Tables —49, references —359.
