However, each of them have an advantage in solving the concrete problems. 5И. Plasma sheet studies. The basic interval is A, when the measurements both in midtail (ISEE-1) and inner PS (GEOS-1) re gions are available (Fig.3); a complementary study of the geosyn chronous orbit data (ATS-6, GOIS satellites etc.) are important for the modelling of near-Earth PS convection in both intervals. Ad dition of few more intervals (like Apr.24,1980, Fig.3) is desir able to cover the duskside PS and to increase the statistics. 5.2. A large-scale pattern of particles, fields and FAC in the ionosphere. Few low-altitude spacecraft (including DE pair, ARCAD, Intercosmos-Bulgaria-1300) provided good measurements of all these parameters at their early stage of operation (interval B ). Combined with the data of TRIAD, ГОААand other satellites, this information seens quite adequate for reconstruction of a two-di mensional pattern. The HE-1 auroral imager data (if existed) may help to monitor the possible evolution of the large-scale pattern during this SMC-period. World wide magnetometer network together with the all-sky camera observations (at least from Spitzbergen Heiss, Cheluskin, Loparskaya) are also important in this matter. 5.3* Precipitation, currents, and E-field in the proximity of the Harang discontinuity. During interval A the data base in cludes real time monitoring by both magnetometer network (SKA) and E-field distribution (STARE), as well as by the spectral camera at the Loparskaya meridian (Fig.6), complemented by few DMSP and TRIAD passes throughout this region. 5.4. Substorm business, among others, may include: a) A search and study of growth-phase type signatures before SMC substorms, as well as possible substorm triggers. b) A study of the "poleward leap" during the substorm at the end of Feb.19,1973 (A) period well covered by the spacecraft and ground-based data. 5-5. Using the parameters of PS together with chosen magnetic field model as the input parameters, numerical modelling of SMC- convection in the midtail and near Earth regions in the manner of Harel et al. (1981) or Pudovkin and Zakharov (1984) seons quite desirable. The output parameters may be compared to the point 5.2 results and to the data from geosynchronous satellites. 5.6. The origin and significance of local and transient fea tures observed within SMC episodes must be studies. Some of them 20
