Published by decision o f the Presidium of the Kola Science Centre Russian Academy of Sciences UDK 550.38; 551.510 Physics of the near-earth space - Apatity: Kola Science Centre RAS, 2000. - 706p. The book combines the results of many year studies o f disturbances within the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. The leading researchers o f the Polar Geophysical Institute have made their contribution in the compilation o f the book. It covers in detail important issues, concerning magnetosphere-ionosphere relations and illustrates new approaches in studies o f the ionosphere processes, using methods o f radio tomography and fractal analysis, presents results o f a study o f the troposphere ozone characteristics in the Arctic. The book can be o f interest also from another point o f view. Some quite valuable historical sections are included in many o f its chapters, besides it illustrates not only the present-day conceptions on magnetosphere-ionosphere relations but also the process o f their formation. The book is dedicated to the 40-year research activity o f the Polar Geophysical Institute and is intended for various groups o f researchers, post graduate students and students o f physics, engaged in the research of or interested in solar-terrestrial relations.
