Lo w e r section: m a g n etometer H-component recordings fr o m the polar cap (Heiss Island) an d at an auroral aone station (Lovozero). The time period w i t h P i Id magnetic pulsations recorded at Lovosero i s also indicated i n the lower panel. figure 6c shows different kinds of magnetic pulsation a c t ivity w i t h i n the polar cap (Heiss Island recordings) an d at auroral zone latitudes,close to the equatorward b oundary of the ousp aurora (Lovozero recording) (of.also Kleimenova et a l . ,1985). Large spikes in the H ~ a n d Z-component reoords from Kola peninsula at 07 5 0 U T (of. lo w e r panel of fig.6c) indicate the existence of a looal intense field-aligned current at the equatorward boundary of the cusp (cf.Lanzerotti et al.,1986). 4. P R E S E HTATIOH O f DATA ЗЕТH o 2 . This section presents the results of studying auroral luminosity using the ground-based observation data from B a r e ntzburg a n d He i s a Is l a n d w i t h emphasis on the relationship b etween the regions of diffuse auroral luminosity a n d discrete auroral forms in the day side sector, on the discrete auroral g a p i n the n e ar-noon sector of the a u r o ral oval, a n d o n the pr o b l e m of the relat ionships of the position variations o f the equatorward b oundary of the oval to the IMP orientation an d to the magnetic disturbance level. The analysis is ba s e d on the data obtained w i t h a ll-sky cameras, scan n i n g photometers, and narrow-angle (6° total field of view) emission photo meters oriented to magnetic zenith. The midnight sector magnetic activity level was Inferred from the Churchill and College magnetogramb r eceived fr o m WDC-B2. The IUF data we r e received from WDC-A. I30
