630.0 n m 5577&630.0nm H - C O M R At 0855 UT the external magnetic field turned northward. Another south ward transition wa s detected at 1003 UT. Bet w e e n 0910 and 1020 UT, correspon ding to northward external field, the luminosity was observed to extend farther no r t h than i n the preceeding period w h e n magnetosheath was ne g a tive. At 1020 UT another, southward shift took place, some 15 min. after the southward field transition. I n the interval 09-10 UT the magnetosheath total field w a s approx. 50 n T w i t h В ~ 40 a n d В ~ 20 nT. У л The January 17, 1985 c a s e » The cusp wa s located no r t h of H y Alesund around magnetic n o o n ( ~ 0830 UT) as shown in the left panel of Figure 5a. Two short southward excursions of dayside luminosity occurred b etween 0900 and 0930 UT, w i t h c orresponding large deflections in the local magnetic field (Fig.5b, right panels). The dayside aurora moved steadily southward JAN.17, 1985 from 0935 UTw Bet w e e n 0940 and 1110 UT, events of luminosity mov-« ing poleward from the m a i n arc were observed, each event lasting typically - 10 min, (Fig.5b). Alaska MSP recordings from the same interval (Fig.5a, middle panel) are obscured by clouds, but combines w i t h magnetometer data from Arctic Village (right panel), the occurence of substorm activity at 0930 is detected. ISBE-2 m agnetosheath magnetic field data from the interval 1003- 1033 UT show the following typical values: B x ~ -10 nT, B y --- 3 nT, B z — -20 nT. H o data exist from the intervals 0900-1003 UT a n d 1033- 1120 UT. The January 4.1984 c a s e . The interplanetary magnetic field was measured from spacecraft ISEE- -2 i n front of the bow-shock. The three left panels i n Fig.6a show B t o t a l’V a n d V traoes have b e e n shifted b y appr. 15 minutes relative to the ground data, in order to take into account the time delay between, the IMF signal detected b y the satel lite in the solar w i n d an d the Figure 5a.
