Figure 4a shows another example of simulta­ neous photometer observations of the midday aurora fr o m Svalbard and the m i d ­ night aurora from Alaska. The north-south component.of the m agnetosheath m a g ­ netic field, recor ded b y spacecraft ISBE-2 is shown i n the left paonel of the figure. ISEE-2 crossed the bow-ehock at 1009 ОТ, A m a j o r shift of the field vector occurred at 0735 UT. Du r i n g the following 1 1/2 h r magnetosheath В was rat her stables B x «=o, B y =20 and Ви=-30 nT. B e t w e e n appr.0750 and 0820 UT both the day- and nightside auroras m o v e d southward. Th e n at 0820 UT, a n e j o r substorm onset occurred on the nightside, wh i c h is clearly reflected in both the optical and geomagnetic recordings (right panel). The auroral breakup was followed b y a distinct poleward expansion. B e t w e e n 0820 and 0850 UT, 4 successive poleward m ovin g transient structures were observed above Svalbard.
