The spacecraft reached the b o w- s hock (from inside) at 1009 UT. Panel 2s north-south me r i d i a n scan profiles of the re d oxygen line (630.0 nm) in the mi d d a y aurora, recorded at N y Alesund, Svalbard (75.4 g e o m . l a w . Panels 3 and 4» similar m e r i d i a n scans of the nightside aurora re c o r d e d at Po k e r Plat, Alaska (65® geom.lat.). Ca y and nightside intensity scales are different. Eight panel: m a g n e t o m e t e r recording from Arctic Village (69° geom, let.). The ground data have be e n shifted by 15 min. relative to the satellite data (Prom Sandholt et al.,1986b). Southward expansion of the nightaide aurora was observed at Poker Plat, Alaska f r o m ~ 09 UT. Then at 0945 U T the onset of a substorm w a s recorded, followed b y two more intensifications at ~ 1030 and 1125 UT. Alaska chain magnetograms suggest that the we s t w a r d electrojet was centered n o r t h of Arctic Village. However, it is not possible to define unambiguously the sub- storm onset time fr o m Alaska chain magnetograms, so that the optical r e c o r dings f r o m Po k e r Plat (local, magnetic midnight — 11 UT) must be used for this purpose. The equatorward b oundary of dayside luminosity returned between 1045 and 1100 UT an d later, b etween 1115 a n d 1155 UT. No IMF data are a v a i lable for the per i od be t w e e n 1115 a n d 1144 UT (data gap). 122
