ting w i t h the earth (Akasofu et al.,1983 ; Friis-Chrie- tensen et al.,1985; Friis- Chrisfcensen,1985) or m a g n e tic stations net data (Levi tin et al.,1982) ma y be used to obtain the average diurnal variation of equi valent currents over the northern hemisphere. The § § І diurnal pattern of the IMF- related plasmp, convection in the polar ionosphere is than obtained by solving the differential equa tion relating the electric potential and the equivalent current function, derived from the ground-based measurements (cf.Fairmark,1980; Kamide et al., 1981). Yer mera trom et al.(1984) studied the relationship between the latitu dinal location of the D PY convection current a n d the F- region electron temp erature enhancement usually associated w i t h the cusp, measured by the Sonder- strom radar. I n this report the relationship b etween the DP Y signature and optical emissions in the polar cusp and cap io investigated for positive and negative values of the IMF В . Figure 2a. Left panel: latitude angle of the IMF vector. Horth is positive. Data from the AMFTE-UKS sa tellite, located close to the bow-shock in the dawn sector. (GS13 coordinates: Rg, Y — 17 Rg. Z =-1 Rg). Spikes at 1140 and 1150 UT are due to bow-shock encoun ters. A barium release per turbation occurred at 1234 UT. The arrow a t '1210 UT marks a sharp northward turning after 1 hour period w i t h Ви^О. Compare wi t h ground-based observations in the midnight sector. Panel 2s H-component dis turbance field at U y X l e a m d Svalbard (75.4° gm.lat.). Positive deflection towards left. Panels 3-5: meridian scanning photometer (ЫЗР) traces from Longyearbyen (74.4 gm lat.). The A H»0 line is the boundary b etween zones of positive and negative H-component deflections. Panels 6-10: MSP traces f r o m Poker Flat, Alaska (65°gm.lat.) (1130 UT=24 M L T ). Da y and nightside intensity scales are diffe rent. Right panel: magnetic dis turbance field at Arctic Village (AVI) (69° gm.lat.) near the center of the w e s t wa r d electrojet at 1230 UT.
