4 INTRODUCTION The Auroral Subcenter of World Data Center B2 continues by this issue its publication of aurora observational data obtained at Soviet stations in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. This issue contains the data taken during the year of 1981. Auroral data are presented in the form oi ascaplots as adopted at Moscow IAGA Assembly in September 1958 /1/. The list of stations and their coordinates are assembled in Table 1. Ascaplots of 1972-1980 were published earlier /5/. Ascaplots present the information about aurora occurence in three latitudinal intervals (north, zenith, south) each corresponding to three degrees of latitude. Auroral activity in the zenith region is given in three ball scale. The data are given for half-an-hour interval of observations. The ascaplots also contain information about cloudiness and moon lighting. The technique of ascaploting is shown. Original data from all the stations which data are used in the present issue are stored in the Auroral Subcenter. The indices of auroral activity are given for each day (Table 2). The ascaplots have been prepared by laborers of the Auroral Subcenter: L.N.Korobeynikova, N.P.Maltseva, O.V.Yuschenko headed by L.N.Smirnova. The indices of auroral activity have been calculated by L.N.Smirnova.
