4 I N T H O D U C T I O * The aurora Subcenter of IDC B2 continuea the publication of aurora observation data obtained at the Soviet stations network in Arctic and Antarctic» The first book of the series was published in 1978 and contained the data of 1972. All aurora data are presented in askaplots as it was adopted at IAGA Assambley (Moscow,1958,Septem ber). The method of askaplotting is described in /1,2/. The list and coordinates of stations which data are used in the present book are givon in table 1. Askaplots contain the information about occurence, position and activity of auroras for each half an hour interval of observations. The aurora position is deter mined in three latitudinal intervals (north, zenith, south) each of which is three deg rees of the latitude. The askaplots also show the moon lightening regions* This book presents the data of all Soviet stations, even those working episodically, in case their data are kept in the aurora Subcenter. The askaplot presentation of aurora data is very comfortable for obtaining the preliminary information about the auroral situation in various regions of the globe, and for selection of material for further investigations. Moreover, it was proved that askaplots can be successfully used for statistical study of the space-tine aurora distribution. The book also presents the Table of auroral activity planetary indices for each day of 1973» The askaplots are prepared by the Subcenter workers L.N.Korobeynikova, N.P.Mal tseva and O.V.Tuschenko under the head of L.N.Molchanova. Auroral activity indices are calculated by L.N.Molchanova.
