The monograph includes the historical background o f the problem, review of modern investigations of the magnetic storms and the original part wherein consistently from the uniform positions they are giving a new theory o f magnetic storm which has been developed in Polar Geophysical institute for some years lately. Also considered are some geophysical applications of this theory which are supported by the experiment. According to this theory the main reason for magnetic storm is always the development o f cross-tail current after turning to the South of vertical component of IMF but not the development o f ring current as it has been traditionally considered up to now. The influence o f the ring current on geomagnetic depression is getting essential during the strong stroms only. The monograph should be recommended both for specialists in magnetospheric physics and for students and post graduate students specializing in these fields.
