The highest total PCDD/F concentrations (126 pg/g dw) were found in bottom sediment from Lake Kuetsjarvi (Station 1). However there were not significant differences between the levels measured in “unpolluted” sites (stations 8 and 9) and the sites downstream the smelters. On the other hand concentrations o f PCDD/F found in modern (surface) sediments from the reference lakes were much higher than those in deeper sediment core slices (Table 8 ).
