WALTER SCHUCK One o f Schuck’s lastflights with an Me 109. his report. Then Rudorffer nodded towards a group of men in pilot’s outwear who hung around outside a bar rack some hundred yards away. Those pilots were the most unmilitary servicemen Schuck had ever seen. Their long hair and beards, their dressings in clear violation of regulations gave the impression of demoralisation. “There’s your Staffel, ” Rudorffer said. “Just look at that motley crew!” Schuck could not understand Rudorffer’s passive complaining, as if he washed his hands of it; after all, Rudorffer was the Gruppenkommandeur! Schuck got the impression that Rudorffer wanted to test Schuck by pointing out the bad shape of the 3rd Staffel. But it was late in the evening, and Schuck decided to deal with the matter only the next day. He went to the Staffel’s quarters where he was met by the aide, a Hauptfeldwebel. Entering his room, Schuck established that the bed was not made. It took some time to find someone who could get him clean sheet and make the bed. It was after midnight before Schuck could get to bed. He had barely fallen asleep when the light was turned on. A Leutnant had entered the room. “Get out of my bed! This is my room!” he shouted at Schuck. Schuck was totally perplexed. What kind of place was this? To everyone’s luck, the aide came running and explained to the Leutnant that this foreign Oberleutnant was the new Staffelkapitan. Schuck woke up very early next morning because his room was freezing cold. He gave up the idea of trying to get some more sleep, and got dressed. While shaving he started to think how to deal with the lacking discipline in the Staffel. Schuck had noticed the grim look on Rudorffer’s face, and he had no intent of going through the same trouble with a superior as he had expe rienced shortly after he had been appointed 10./JG 5’s Staffelkapitan the previous August. He decided that he would show his men who was the master, and what is the meaning of a military unit. While Schuck still was shaving, he heard a soft female voice from the next room. The soft female voice asked someone, apparently in the same room, if there were any news. Then another, deeper, female voice answered: “Yeah, the new commander is here.” “What does he look like?” asked the first woman. “I have no idea.” “Well, it doesn’t matter. I’ll button up on him, and then we’ll have no problem with him!” A wave of rage shot up inside Schuck. In the corri dor outside his room, he met the aide. He asked about the female voices he had heard but was told that those were typists. “That doesn’t matter,” Schuck snapped. “Have a march order prepared for the two ladies and send them to Berlin!” 1 x
