He was just 21 when killed, and had achieved his first victory while flying a Hurricane on 2 June 1942 when he shot down a Ju 87 dive-bombing the port of Murmansk. By the time he claimed his second success, Pilipenko had been promoted to senior sergeant and made CO of a squadron. By the end of 1942 he was considered one o f the most experienced pilots in 78th IAP, and he often shared that experience with other pilots at their conferences. He was twice awarded the Order of the Red Banner. When 27th IAP converted to the Hurricane Pilipenko offered to help the regiment’s pilots become familiar with their new equipment. He recorded his sixth victory, over a Bf 109, during his final battle, and was posthumously promoted to senior lieutenant. Fellow Hurricane ace Capt Vasiliy Adonkin had been awarded his third Order of the Red Banner just prior to Pilipenko’s death. In late July 1943 Adonkin was put forward for the title of HSU, although he did not receive it for a further six months. The official recommendation for the award noted that ‘during his period of combat activity, Comrade Adonkin flew 365 combat sorties, logged 372 flying hours and has fought in 42 air battles, during which he has destroyed ten enemy aircraft. He made 31 successful attacks on enemy ground troops, other targets and small enemy vessels.
