It was subsequently used w ith success They were soon attacking me from all sides, tracer passing right beside me, literally a metre away. My situation was becoming critical. A I Shvetsov was constantly giving me orders over the radio from 122nd IAD’s command post, but I just didn’t have time to react to them. I had only one life-saving thought in these few moments — to throw the aircraft into a spin. That’s what I did. When I recovered the Hurricane I could see that there were a large number of our aircraft in the “carousel” below me, from the Northern Fleet Air Force, the 14th Army Air Force and our own air defence aircraft.’ --------------------- D e a t h o f P e t r S g i b n e v ---------------------- Having displayed his skill and courage during the aerial battles fought during the spring and summer of 1942, Petr Sgibnev progressed rapidly through the ranks. At the beginning of October he was posted to 2nd GKAP and on the 13th of that month was awarded the title of HSU. He also received a Gold Star as well as the Order of Lenin by order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. By the end of the year Sgibnev’s achievements had been recognised by the Allies, and he received a British DFC. In January 1943 Sgibnev succeeded Guards Maj Ivan Tumanov as the commander of 2nd GKAB after the latter was killed in an aircraft accident —this unit had previously been led by 65 © Osprey Publishing • www.ospreypublishing.com AR CT IC WAR HOTS UP
