and suddenly I felt a strange sensation. I looked back just in time to see some “Messers” chasing us, trailing black smoke, and now they’d caught up with us. One began an attack from behind and to the right. “I’ll take him head-on!” I thought to myself. I managed to shout a warning to my colleagues over the radio as I threw the aircraft into a half-roll. The Fascists opened fire. The tracers rushed towards me in a colourful volley. “Don’t turn away! Don’t turn away!”, I told myself, pressing my face against the gunsight. ‘I pressed the firing button several times but none of the rockets — RS-82 Katyushas —flew out from under the wings. Then I pressed the trigger for the machine guns. A shower of tracer bullets spewed from the 12 barrels. The aircraft shook violently, but I didn’t take my finger off the trigger until the slender dirty-grey fuselage and stumpy wings of the lead “Messer” had flashed across my gunsight. After a steep turn the Fascist sheltered behind the mountains.
