Fig. 23, 24. Drawings are based on the motive of "obtain­ ing" songs, similar to "obtaining" of ethnographic ex­ hibits (fig. 29,31). In the caption in fig. 23 an ordinary citation which is derived from a romance "You used to ask for songs , from repertoire of a Gipsy songs singer Sasha Makarov. (1910-ies). By the way, in the drawing of V.Ya.V. uses some mercantile methods of getting interested an informant: holding in his hands, obviously the expedition canned food, he shows one of cans to a woman. Fig. 24 uses the theme of flirtation for the sake of getting ethnographic information or exhibits (compare fig. 11,31). "Strawberry" as a play­ ful-ironical synonym of romantic-erotic adventures goes back to the poem by N. V. Gogol "Dead souls". In Chapter 4, Nozdrev tells Tchitchikov about a new friend, "a really nice person" and "a hard drinker re­ ally and truly" lieutenant Kuvshinnikov: "Believe it or not, he can't miss even common women. He calls this: to use some "strawberry".
