Fig. 14,15,16. A series of three drawings can be entitled con ventionally the "search of "heisse". In the Baltic- Finnish mythology Hiissi is a ghost of forest, a giant, devil. In later Finnish mythological plots it is a spook, a spirit of deceased person, which appearance fore bodes death or a giant. There is observed a tendency to use Hiissi name as a designation of any evil spirit. Huge rock boulders, hills of rocks (sO called Hiissi's gardens) were dedicated to him. It is quite possible that the word "heise" in this context in figure captions is a distorted "hiissi", and Charnolusky an ethnogra pher - student used it as designation of an evil spirit, as well as the sacred place related to the latter, to the search of which the efforts of expedition participants were directed. Besides the widely known sanctuaries of Nenets (the island of Vaigach and lake Numto) in tundra of Kanin peninsula there were scattered small sacrificial places belonging either to one kin, or to separate families wandering in the given area. Altars were often put near a stone of some special form. In fig. 14 Charnolusky schematically presented the attributes of a similar sacrificial place: bones of reindeer, a fence, a small anthropomorphic figure of an idol ... But in the centre there is a huge fico! Field researchers diligently sketch and measure the found object. On the one hand, Charnolusky makes fun of fanaticism of ethnographers-neophytes, ready to investigate whatever comes their way if only this something at least by assumption would refer to the studied culture. On the other hand, the drawing met aphorically represents a usual expedition collision: you go searching, and working for a long time and instead of result you get - a fico! Of course, masters- field researchers as always assure: "A negative result is a result too", - but usually it is a poor consolation for students. By the way, the professional legend of any expe dition has in its annals similar "searches" of "heisse". Usually they finish with exactly such return:" ... they made their way on shivering tired feet tired with contemplation ... ".
