Caption: "Having milked dry a cow he left for expedition" shouldn't be understood literally. The author scatters in the drawing some hints to figura tive perusal. A cow is milked in Petrograd, it is writ ten on the bucket "Expedition". The person who is milking (if we judge by other drawings) is V.Ya.V. (Volodya), the head of expedition (we can recognize the typical figure, and especially - turned-up nose). By the way, the "person" by the cow obviously has human features. We do not exclude possible portrait similarity to someone from the management officials who were engaged in financing of the expedition. In this drawing a colloquial phraseological unit is graphically presented: a "milk cow". The material support of expedition in 1922 was hardly problem- less. The general situation in the country was not favourable for subsidising of ethnographic research, and the participants of expedition apparently were not well-off. As a matter of fact, any expedition at all times (and now!) is connected with search of a "milk cow". Fig. 4. Fig. 5. Hospitality of local residents - one of "whales" of the ethnographic expedition, which participants usually live not in tents, as geologists but in houses. Charnolusky creates a comical metaphor of one of possible collisions of hospitality. The big house in nine windows is blown up with expedition belong ings. The real owners "hang out" from windows, and the new ones - sit on the roof on a heap of things. Though maybe Charnolusky also wanted to specify the disproportion of possibilities of the given lodging for the night and the volume of expedition equip ment.
