Expedition to Kaninsky Peninsula in 1922 The route of the Kanin-Czech expedition can be traced definitely enough from captions to the presented drawings: Petrograd - Arkhangelsk - the White sea —the Arctic ocean —Kanin Nose - Sem- zha - Mgla - Ness - Snopa - Pesha - Arkhangelsk. We have few grounds to say dates of the expedition really were August - October, 1922. Fig. 1, 2. V.V.Charnolusky self-portraits-cartoons. The author has a close similarity to his photos which allows us to judge about his drawings characters resemblance to their prototypes. Caption: "An author who defies cartooning", - it is ironic: the author defies cartooning - comical images, as he himself is comic. Representing himself as a knead ing trough ("kvashnya") (see fig. 2 ), which has his portrait similarity, Charnolusky makes fun of both his tendency to corpulence and obviously of some features of own character. A kneading trough is a tub in which women make sour the dough, put bread [V.Dahl (Dictionary)]. In some dialects the word "kvashnya" was used in figurative sense: a languid, lazy person (Vyatka region); a cry-baby (Orlov region) [V.Dahl (Dictionary)]. A drawing by Charnolusky can be interpreted as a case of graphic realization of steady comparison. "As a "kvashnya" (kneading trough)" - they say about a slow, awkward and passive person. In Russian there are some steady combinations:"to grow fat as "kvashnya", "to sit as "kvashnya" [Mokienko, N ikitina 2001: 98]. Besides, a draw ing draws at tention to the rising dough evoking quite certain associations: fermentation, panting, crawling out (spreading), shapelessness, tenacity, sticking etc. Obviously, Charnolusky in his drawings (probably, also in life) gave these properties to himself. - 4 Рис. 2 Автопортрет Fig. 2 Self-portrait 99
