24 A Short Hagiography o f the Venerable Ttyphon Under threat o f death from these “cun ning people", Tryphon was forced to leave his monastery for eight years. Dur ing his absence and without permisson, the monks transferred the monastery from Saint Tryphon’s hermitage to the Pechenga estuary which was was more convenient for pursuing crafts, trade and other worldy concerns. In 1556, thanks to the intercession o f the Venerable Theodoret and the mira cles performed by the Pechenga elder at the royal court, the monastery received a charter from the Tsar Ivan the Terrible. Together with a new abbot, Gury, the Venerable Tryphon returned to the Pechenga River. Like other Kola elders, he accepted “in obe dience” the new principles governing the relationship between Church and State and the project o f constructing northern fortress- monasteries. The monks o f the Pechenga monastery were not “easy” and fully reflected the passionate features o f their founding father s character in his youth. Tryphon’s friend, the Venerable Varlaam o f Keretsk, wrote to him that this was God s will for the monastery and the cross given him by the Lord: “You, Tryphon, have been blessed tofou n d this monastery and gather monks into it, but the dwellers there will be unruly, like wild beasts, sim ilar to you in rage and anger". As the Venerable Tryphon grew spiritually, overcoming his “rage and unruliness", his monks also became more humble in spirit: “Although your spiritual children have not ceased grumbling, by your constant prayers, chanting and vigils you have led them from brutality to humility and sense”.
