A.M. Khokhlov S. Wikan was one of the main initiators of establishing a joint protected area on the Russian and Norwegian banks of the Pasvik. Johan Koren (2000), zoological and botanical articles. Wikan not only participat­ ed in the survey work necessary for planning the nature reserves along the shared river, but took part in waterfowl surveys, helped Russian colleagues in their work on the Norwegian side. The joint book on the international nature reserve was initiated and co-authored by him (Wikan et al. 1994). The Norwegian ornithologist from Trondheim University Per Gustav Thingstad worked in Pasvik during several field seasons. His main interest was waders and water­ fowl. P.G. Thingstad made the first transect waterfowl coun t in the Schaanning research polygon that runs along both the banks o f the river. The surveys are done here annually in late May - early June. The results o f his studies are presented in sev­ eral reports and articles (Thingstad 1995, Thingstad et al. 1997, 2000), parts o f which have been translated into Russian and included into Annals o f N atu re o f Pasvik nature reserve (Annals of Nature... 1998). P.G. Thingstad co -au tho red the Norwegian Bird Atlas which contains data on the avifauna o f Pasvik. Researchers from Svanhovd Environmental C entre, M orten G u n th e r and Paul Aspholm participated in ornithological studies in Pasvik for m any years. They co n ­ ducted the international waterfowl surveys and made special observations on the eco l­ ogy of selected species that inhabit the river and the sea coast. They prepared several ornithological reports and articles together w ith P.G. Thingstad (Thingstad et al. 1997, 2000; Gunther, 2000, 2006; G un th er & Thingstad 2002). Apart from this, M.
