Bianchi actively participated in the establishm ent o f Pasvik N ature Reserve and has studied there the eco­ logy o f waterfowl during many years. logical studies: international waterfowl surveys in the Pasvik river, setting up and checking nest-boxes, winter transect counts. They kept phenological records, pho­ tographed, wrote books and articles on Pasvik, participated in scientific conferences and international meetings. Pasvik nature reserve was the first one in Russia to pub­ lish its Annals of Nature. Currently ten volumes o f Annals have been published, one of them in English Annals of Nature. ..2000). Each volume o f Annals contains a sec­ tion on birds that presents the results o f the work o f ornithologists who visited Pasvik. O.A. Makarova organised publication and co-authored “Cadastre of vertebrates o f Pasvik nature reserve” (Makarova et al. 2003). It includes the data on 218 bird species recorded within the nature reserve with brief information on their status and typical habitats. During 15 years A.M. Khokhlov and O.A. Makarova shaped the directions of research in Pasvik and facilitated successful ornithological studies. On the Norwegian side a great role in the foundation o f a joint nature reserve, study o f avifauna and publication o f books on the nature o f Pasvik was played by Stejnar Wikan. His activity in collection and publication o f historical documents and other materials made it possible to realize the importance o f founding an interna­ tional protected area in the Pasvik valley.
