Bianchi produced a report which explained the necessity to create a joint nature reserve along the Pasvik river. During the following decade V.V. Bianchi visited Pasvik to study breeding ecology o f the Comm on Goldeneye and Smew. On the Russian and Norwegian banks o f Pasvik, nest-boxes for these species were set up, which are still being monitored. V.V. Bianchi took part in waterfowl surveys conduced together with Norwegian ornithologists, served as expert for avian research projects in the nature reserve, participated in com pilation o f the first annotated checklist o f vertebrates in Pasvik nature reserve. He w rote reports for Annals o f Nature that formed the basis for the paper “On the ecology o f ducks (Anatidae) of the Pasvik river (Northern F ennoscandia)” (B ianchi 1999). The work by V.V. Bianchi laid the foundations for avian population research in Pasvik. He also initiated the inclusion o f the whole Pasvik protected area into the Ramsar list o f wet­ lands of global importance under the name “ Schaanning polygon” . The Norwegian part of the nature reserve was included into this list in 1996 (Storkersen 1996); the Russian nature reserve is included into the prospective Ram sar list (Bianchi & Makarova 2000). The director of Pasvik nature reserve Anatoly M. Khokhlov and his wife, scien­ tific director o f the reserve Olga A. Makarova played a very im po rtant role in facili­ tating ornithological research in the protected area and in securing friendly relations with Norwegian colleagues. Systematic studies o f the fauna and ecology o f the birds o f Pasvik were only made possible due to their efforts. They invited specialists from various research centres in Russia and provided them w ith all the necessary facilities Apart from this, A.M. Khokhlov and O.A.
