Hunting perm it that allowed H. Schaanning to collect mammal and bird specimens in Russia. H. Schaanning made detailed o rn ith o ­ logical observations on the Pasvik River in 1900—1907. On the basis o f this results he published an avifaunistic review o f this region. he visited Lake Inari and Varanger flord which means that he also visited Pasvik (Bianchi 2000). To characterize the birds o f the Pasvik valley, H. Hebei used the data that were obtained by him from Dr. A. Wessel from Kirkenes and by the renowned sportsman and egg collector Baron Lilieschtirnfrom Sweden. The author divided Russian Lapland into 16 districts. He wrote that the Pasvik river was a border between “ Inari and Varanger district” in the west and “the Pasvik basin“ to the east (Bianchi 2000). Hebei lists 136 bird species in the Pasvik valley (Annals o f Nature... 1997). The materials collected by the expedition in 1899-1901 were later described by V.L. Bianchi, and a member o f the expedition N.A. Smirnov published a number of interesting data in the magazine “Nature and Hunting” , partly co-authored with H. Hebei (Bianchi, 1982). The next step in the ornithological study o f Pasvik was compilation o f the list o f species inhabiting the Pasvik river and adjacent areas, and making additions to this list. 35
