Archangel and then to St. Petersburg by steamboat via the Norwegian ports Vadso and Vardo. We internionally nam e the stops made en route, since it becom es evident that T. Pleske at least passed by steamboat from Russia to Norway and back near the mouth o f th e Pasvik river. T hese were th e norm al scheduled steamboats that perm itted to make excursions along the coast and into river estu aries. T. Pleske was a very conscientious zool ogist. He concluded th at his data and m ateri als o f his com panions did not allow him to describe th e fauna o f Russian Lapland. Therefore upon retu rn to St. Petersburg he started to study the literature. This delayed the publication o f his report by seven years. In his report T. Pleske w rote th a t he did not limit himself to Russian Lapland but included the data on adjacent Norwegian and Swedish areas. Judging by his description, he included a large area from the Arctic Ocean to Kandalaksha and from the eastern coast o f the Kola Peninsula to the northern tip o f the G u lf o f Bothnia and the rivers Torneo, Muonio and Tana. This means that the Pasvik valley and adjacent areas were includ ed in his review. The list o f the literature analysed by T. Pleske included ca. 300 titles. Besides, he used unpublished materials given to him by Finnish ornithologists J.A. Palmen, A.J. Mela and Enwald. The checklist compiled by Pleske comprises 235 species, including 180 for the Kola Peninsula and 25 typical only o f its western part. Pleske also identified vegetation belts o f Russian Lapland. Pasvik was attributed to the forest zone with mixed spruce and pine forest that practically reached the Barents Sea coast along the Pasvik river. As noted by V.V. Bianchi, Pleske did not delim itate lon gitudinal borders (Annals of Nature... 1997). This shortcom ing was corrected by H. Hebei who compiled the next checklist o f birds o f the Kola Peninsula. In 1902, H erm ann Hebei published a m onograph en titled “ M aterial on ornithology o f Lapland and Solovetsky A rchipelago” th at included a list o f birds o f Russian Lapland. It was based on the data o f his own studies o f the avifauna o f the Kola Peninsula in 1879-1901, and on numerous publications and personal comm u nications of Russian and foreign authors. H. Hebei m entioned 193 bird species including 133 species breeding in the Kola Peninsula. For 34 species he gave the data on the timing of their breeding. In 1896 and 1898, Hebei visited F inland, and in 1901 34 H.F. Hebei completed the list o f birds o f Russian Lapland on the basis o f his own studies and literature data, and made significant additions to the list o f species inhabiting the Pasvik Valley.
