A.M. Khokhlov A utumn is one o f the most beautiful seasons in Pasvik. A.M. Khokhlov Pine and pine and birch forests stretch along the Pasvik valley far to the north. The pine forests o f Pasvik are very variable. Lichen pine forests grow on dry sandy or pebble soils, typical lichens belong to the genera Cladonia, Cetraria, Stereocaulon (Tsvetkov & Chertovsky 1978). In wetter places moss pine forests grow with a lower storey o f green mosses, haircap moss, sphagnum , grass and subshrubs. Most common in Pasvik are subshrub-lichen and lichen -sub sh rub pine forests. Lichen-green moss and green moss-subshrub pine forests are less comm on. The 1 8
