The Pasvik River, the main waterway o f Pasvik. S. Y. Mullari Lake Kaskamajarvi is situated in a depression between the hills and has a tectonic origin. The river freezes over in late October —early November, the ice melts in mid or late May. The ice thickness varies from I cm in rapids to 1 m in coastal areas. Large rapids and branch ducts o f water power stations never freeze. The lakes along the Pasvik river occupy a significant portion o f the valley and have a different origin. The large Lake Kaskamajarvi which has the area o f ca. 188 ha and is up to 20 m deep is located in a tectonic rift. Smaller lakes are located on the plain and in depressions between the hills. 13
